How to Remove Stress When Moving in The Winter
Moving any time of the year can be stressful, but add in cold weather, snow, and limited daylight, the process can seem overwhelming! The good news is that moving in the winter months doesn’t have to be a stressful experience as long as you approach it with some flexibility and planning.
At Watermark Land Transfer, we have helped hundreds of families close on a new home during the wintertime. Here are our best winter moving tips for a safe, stress-free, and successful move:
Winter weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mid-Atlantic. One day it could be bright and sunny with mild temperatures, and then the next day you are shoveling 6 inches of snow. Keep an eye on the long-range forecast for the weeks leading up to your move. If there is a large storm hitting your area on the day you plan to move, see if you can postpone the move by a day or two.
This isn’t always possible depending on the other parties involved in your move, but if you don’t want to move in the snow, there’s a good chance no one else wants to either! Having contingency plans in place can reduce the stress of a winter move. Work with your real estate agent on a “Plan B” in case of poor weather.
Start Packing Early
Packing early is a good strategy to ease the stress of a move any time of year, but especially in the winter. Make a packing schedule a few weeks out and pack at least one box a day. Double wrap fragile items like plates, glasses, and pictures just in case something gets dropped after a slip on snow or ice.
Wrap furniture in blankets or large pieces of wool to protect them from the elements. Snow, salt residue, freezing rain, and other winter weather conditions can really take a toll on furniture and personal belongings.
Hire a Moving Company
We understand the need to save money on a move, but sometimes it makes sense to hire professionals to do the work for you. Moving companies have the experience of moving in the winter, especially navigating snow or slush-covered streets with a moving truck. Moving companies have the experience and knowledge to get your belongings to your new home safely.
Prepare Your Homes - Both of Them - for the Move
Before the big day, prepare both the home you are moving from and the home you are arriving at for winter weather. If there is snow or slush, clean off the sidewalks and driveway to prevent a slip and fall. Turn the heat on at your new place so you aren’t arriving to frigid indoor temperatures. Protect your floors at both homes by laying cardboard or mats. Have snacks and water for your movers and for your family and take extra care to provide a safe moving environment.
Take a Breath
Let’s face it – moving can cause anxiety and stress! Of the entire process of buying or selling a home, the logistics of moving day can cause even the most enthusiastic homeowners headaches. Moving in the winter doesn’t have to be stressful – take your time and plan ahead – you can do it!
Be patient, allow for extra time, and check-in with anyone who is helping you with your move. Moving day is the beginning of a new journey for you so try to relax and take it all in stride! At the end of the day, you will be in your new home!
