Easy Ways To Keep Your Property Safe During The Winter Months

Looks like Punxsutawney Phil called it – we are in for a few more weeks of winter weather before spring temperatures arrive! The cold, harsh, winter months can really take a toll on a home. Heavy snow, freezing temperatures, ice dams, and strong winds can cause a lot of damage.

How can you keep your property safe during the winter? And what should you do in case of damages? Let’s take a look at what you can do as a homeowner to keep your home safe and warm before spring arrives.

Protect Your Pipes

During the winter months, pipes can freeze, burst, and flood a home. To prevent burst pipes, insulate exterior pipes and turn off the water supply to outside faucets. For interior plumbing, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to surround pipes and fixtures and in extreme temperatures, let the water flow occasionally to prevent it from freezing in the waterline. No one likes a flooded basement, so be sure to take precautions before the next deep freeze!

Remove Snow from Roof

An excess buildup of snow on your roof can cause ice dams. Ice dams form when melting snow refreezes into a ridge of ice at the eave of the roof. Once formed, it prevents water from properly draining off your roof and can cause roof leaks. Most hardware stores carry snow rakes that are specially designed to help you remove snow from your roof safely and prevent damage to your roof shingles.

Invest in a Generator

Winter power outages are most often caused by ice storms and downed power lines and can last more than a day or two. A generator can help you heat your home as well as keep your fridge and lights on while you wait for the power to return. Before installing a generator yourself, check with an electrician to make sure you have the right equipment for your needs. Remember – never run a generator inside your home!

Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detector

Warming your home with a furnace or other heat source? While these are great ways to keep your family warm, some can leak carbon monoxide if not properly ventilated. A carbon monoxide detector will alert you if there is any risk in your home.

Keep Garage Doors Closed

If you have a garage attached to your home, keep it closed as much as possible during the winter months. Keeping the door shut will prevent cold air from entering the house and protect plumbing from extreme temperatures.

What to Do If Your Property Is Damaged

Even with proper preventative measures, sometimes winter weather can still damage your home. You may feel overwhelmed and not know what to do next or where to turn. Here are a few steps to help you manage property damages during the winter months:

  • Make sure your family is safe. In extreme situations, your property may be unsafe. Make sure everyone in your home – family, friends, guests, and four-legged family members – is in a safe area. If your home isn’t safe to stay in, make alternate sleeping arrangements until you can return to the home.
  • Turn off power and water to damaged areas. One of the most common property damages in the winter is burst pipes. Burst pipes can cause thousands of dollars in damages. Turn off the water to stop water from pouring into your home and shut off the electricity to prevent a fire.
  • Document property damages. In order to accurately complete a homeowner’s insurance claim, you will want to have a list of all damaged items. Include all furniture, valuables, decor, flooring, appliances, documents, and anything else that was damaged. Take photos, too, so you have a visual record of damages.
  • Contact your insurance company. After the storm is over and you are safe, reach out to your insurance representative to get a claim started. Your agent will be able to help you with the next steps and may recommend a professional restoration company to assist with clean up and if needed, reconstruction.
