Moving Soon? Tips to Destress Your Move

The average homeowner stays in their home for more than a decade. That’s quite a bit of time to accumulate “stuff” like home decor, yard tools, furniture, and personal items such as clothing, toys, and trinkets. Facing a home move after accumulating belongings for 10+ years can be overwhelming and stressful!

How can you destress an upcoming move if you’ve lived in your home for a long time? While moving is always stressful, you can make it easier on yourself if you come up with – and stick to – a plan! Here are ways to reduce stress of a move and make your moving experience as easy as possible.

Accept the Stress

It’s no secret that moving can be stressful – in fact, it’s a normal reaction to the fear of the unknown! If you are feeling excessive stress about your upcoming move, know you are not alone. Find ways to manage your stress levels such as getting enough sleep, exercising, reading, and talking with your friends and family members. Make your mental health a priority to get through the moving process.

Create a Checklist ... or Two

We are big fans of organization and planning! The first step in tackling a big move is to stay organized and create a checklist. Or in this case, multiple checklists! Break down your big move into three ‘chapters’ – pre-move, day of the move, and after the move. There are multiple checklists you can find online to help manage your big day.

Purge Before Packing

One of the best ways to reduce your overall moving stress is to purge before packing. If you have been in your home for a long time, go room by room and toss, recycle, or donate items that are underused or never even used at all! Not using the rice cooker you received as a wedding gift? Donate it to a thrift store or a family friend. When was the last time you wore that track suit from your twenties? A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t touched it or used it in a year, it’s safe to donate or recycle.

Pack Room by Room

When moving to a new home, systemic, organized packing is key! After you’ve purged items you are not taking with you, go room by room and pack in a methodical manner.

Start with rooms used occasionally such as a formal dining room, den, or guest room. Then move on to kids’ bedrooms, powder rooms, your bedroom, and finally, the kitchen.

The kitchen may be the most challenging room of all to pack up. Once you start taking things out of drawers and cabinets you will be surprised just how many items are in the kitchen. Large items like appliances should be wiped down before being boxed up, and if you missed purging the junk drawers, now is the time to do it!

Take frequent breaks and if you are feeling overwhelmed, tackle the kitchen in small chunks of time.

Consider Moving Midweek

Most homeowners schedule their closing date for a Friday and use the weekend to move so they do not have to take additional time off work. While this is a solid strategy, moving during the work week can oftentimes be more productive and less stressful. There are several benefits to moving midweek including:

  • Moving companies may be more expensive on a Saturday. You may be able to save money by moving on a Wednesday or Thursday rather than a Saturday.
  • Childcare may be available at no additional cost. If you have school-aged children or kids in daycare, you can let them keep their normal routine while you tackle the move. When they are around on a Saturday move, you will have to keep them occupied or find a babysitter.
  • No kids but have fur babies? You can likely find a pet daycare for one day rather than having to do a weekend boarding for your four-legged family members. Pets can get really stressed out on moving day and the best plan is to have them out of the house.

Hire a Professional Mover

If your budget allows, one of the best gifts you can do for yourself is to hire a professional moving company. Movers have the experience, patience, and tools to move your stuff safely, easily, and efficiently to your new home. Some moving companies will even come pack your house for you, of course for an extra fee. Not sure where to start to find a reputable mover? Talk to your real estate agent or your trusted title company about a referral.
