Our Tips for Choosing a Real Estate Agent
Buying or selling a home is an exciting experience! There is the thrill of the hunt and the excitement of the sale. Having an experienced real estate agent on your side can make all the difference. There’s no shortage of real estate agents, so how do you know which one will be the best fit for you and your family?
At Watermark Land Transfer, we have helped hundreds of buyers and sellers complete their real estate transactions at settlement and have collaborated with many different realtors. Here are our tips for choosing an agent that will meet your needs and real estate goals:
Go Online for Research
The first place to start finding an agent is online. Reputable, experienced agents will have an online presence where you can find reviews from former clients, their current listings, their experience, and in some cases, you can learn more about their personality. Explore their profile on Google and Facebook to get a sense of what areas they cover and who they are as a person.
When doing online research, also check to see if an agent is also listed as a Realtor(R). A Realtor is an active member of the National Association of Realtors. Members pledge to abide by the association’s standards, code of ethics, and go through additional classroom training to earn the designation.
Ask for Referrals
There is no better compliment to a realtor than a referral from a past client. Ask homeowners about their experience and see if they would recommend their agent. What were they happy about? Did they have a good experience? People in your network who were happy with their own real estate experience are good resources to find a potential listing agent or buyer’s agent.
You and your real estate agent will be spending some time together, so it is important to choose one with which you have a good rapport. Are they approachable? Are they reachable? While you do not need to be lifelong friends, you do want to work with someone you respect and are drawn to. Interview at least three agents to find one that you mesh well with.
Do They Listen to Understand?
By far the best quality of a good realtor is being a good listener. As you describe your dream home, or share what you want or do not want in a house, does your realtor listen and understand? Did they understand your price range? Some real estate professionals may not have the listening skills to help you effectively and efficiently find your new home or sell your current home.
Look for Passion and Enthusiasm
If you are starting your journey in the real estate market, you will want an agent who matches your passion and enthusiasm. Upbeat, driven realtors are passionate about their jobs and want to do the best they can to help someone buy a home. Pay attention to their marketing materials, organization, and signage. All of these are indicators of if someone is passionate and enthusiastic about representing you in the buying or selling process.
